And she's Canadian!

I first heard about her from the fantastic grammar Professor Melgar during my second year of university. My prof thought the best way to teach grammar was through writing, and wrote we did! I wrote stories, in Spanish of course, about vampires and crazy vacations, a trip to the drycleaner's gone wrong, lame poems, and nonfiction pieces about trips to Central America. Along with writing was lots of reading, and to top it off, she introduced us to her author-friend, who, although she writes in English, is quite the Hispanista.

Introducing the fabulous Caroline Roe! Perhaps you know her as Medora Sale. No?

Well, she came to give a reading of her latest novel, and I hung on to every word. My class collectively groaned when she stopped: ONE more page, please? - Oh, the suspense! Holding a PhD from the University of Toronto's Centre for Medieval Studies, Ms Roe writes... mysteries set in medieval Spain! Mysteries and historical fiction and set in Spain? Yes please!

There are eight books in the Isaac of Girona series. Think 14th century Spanish Sherlock, only cooler. Helped by his daughter Raquel, Isaac, a blind physician, solves one Medieval crime after another . If you're looking for some fast paced armchair time travel and sleuthing, do check them out. Just make sure you have lots of time - no matter which one you pick, you might not be able to put it down until you finish!
