Day 23: The Other First Spanish Sky Crapper

"I remember when that sky crapper went up," said Spanish Sister. "Before, we thought some buildings in Madrid were big. The communications tower, some hotels, our block of flats. And then we were all impressed by this new one. After that, lots of tall buildings came to Madrid, but I will always remember the Torre Picasso as the first one."

The Torre Picasso, at 43 floors (topped by a rooftop heliport), was the tallest building in Madrid from 1988 to 2007. Built by American architect Minoru Yamasaki, who designed the original World Trade Center in New York City. An interesting connection to the home of the sky scraper.


It certainly has an American feel. Big! Offices! Lights! And it has made the free daily paper´s Top 20 Architectural Wonders of Spain list. 

 

Even though Madrid has jumped on the sky scraper bandwagon, the Torre Picasso still impresses - you can see it from all over the city, a slice of white in the sky.
